About Openreach

BT provides electronic communications services to millions and millions of people. Whether they’re using an internet connection provided by them, speaking to someone over a landline maintained by them or even if they’re using their own mobile phone, BT plays a crucial role in keeping that large interconnected web of communication running smoothly. Openreach is a part of BT and, specifically, is the part that maintains this network and keeps everyone connected.

As much as wireless connections may be becoming more and more prevalent, it can’t be denied that wires are still playing a central role in keeping everything running – you see the electrical wires connected to poles all way way across the countryside and in towns and cities too. Somebody has to maintain all of those wires and make sure all of the connections are all still working. The people who do that are Openreach. It’s an absolutely essential service in our modern world, but surprisingly something that is often overlooked. Without the service provided by Openreach, the phone and internet services that people use as part of their everyday lives would come to an end.

Openreach launched in 2006 and was initially known as BT Openreach. Openreach is a wholly owned subsidiary of BT and it reports directly to the BT chief executive – this inherent connection to BT is why it used to have “BT” in its title. Since its launch, Openreach has provided and improved access to phone and internet services to millions of people within the UK. Technology is always improving, and as it does, Openreach is required to update all of the hardware used to ensure that it is capable of maintaining the higher quality services which improved piece of technology can provide.

Fibre Broadband

Openreach are perhaps best known for the fibre broadband service that they offer to people across the UK. Fibre broadband helps to significantly increase the speed of internet connections as well as the speed and clarity of telephone calls. Everybody knows the frustrations of an extremely slow internet connection and of a call which is really hard to hear or understand. Superfast broadband is the latest addition to the country’s broadband services and Openreach are in the process of introducing it across the UK. Once this process is complete, all communications in the UK will provide a higher level of satisfaction. Over 26 millions premises already have access to this, but the work isn’t complete yet. They are working with the government for funding to reach locations in rural areas which otherwise would not have access to this kind of service.

The Openreach Charter

Openreach have a charter which they like to adhere to in order to provide the best possible service for all of their customers. Here’s what they have on that charter:

Engineer Visits

When you purchase something new from Openreach, it is quite likely that they will arrange for an engineer to visit to ensure that you are able to get set up properly with your new piece of kit. As soon as the purchase is made, you are given the opportunity to arrange a date for an engineer to visit. When the day comes for them to make their visit, the engineer will call or text ahead of time to confirm that they will be arriving at the arranged time. Once the engineer arrives, make sure that you take the time to check their ID badge, as it is possible that fraudsters could discover that you have an appointment at this time and then use this opportunity to get inside your house and discreetly steal a few things. When the engineer arrives, they will discuss with you where best to put the equipment and then discuss your options for wiring. They’ll talk you through the whole process and explain everything as they do it.

Where is Superfast Fibre Broadband Available?

If you’re interested in using the Openreach superfast broadband connection, you might like to know where exactly this service is available. It is still being slowly instated across the UK, so some areas are still without the service, but the majority of people can access it. Click here to find out if it is available in your area. All you need to do is enter your postcode and let the site do the rest of the work. If it is available in your area and you are yet benefiting from it, then you can arrange for it to be instated in your house through the same page linked above.

Why is My Connection Not Working?

If you’re internet connection is not working, then it could either be a problem with the Openreach problems in that area, or it could be a problem with your connection specifically. If the problem is just an issue in your area, then it will soon be resolved by the people at Openreach and you need not worry about it. Storms and vandalism can both be causes of problems to your internet connection. You can check here to see whether or not the problem is in your area. If the area does not extend beyond your own home, then you should call one of the helplines listed above and one of the service operators should be able to provide you with the guidance you need to get things working once again.

Report Damage

As the wires that are put up by Openreach are out in the open and can be reached by all most members of the public, it is sadly not uncommon for their wires and poles to be damaged by criminals. As these are part of a network which benefits the entire nation (and, indeed, which many depend upon) Openreach consider it very important that they are informed in the event that anything of theirs is damaged so that repairs can be enacted immediately. If you see a crime in the process of being committed, it is important that you not get involved as it is possible that you could be hard by the criminals in the process. In these cases it is based, either to dial 999 or to call Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

SmartWater

Openreach cables across the country are now forensically marked with SmartWater, an invisible solution which is almost impossible to be removed and and can be traced to the individual street of origin. This cutting edge piece of crime stopping technology can help to ensure that criminals who attempt Openreach’s cables will inevitably be caught and punished for their crimes. This is why it is important for you to call the police in the event that you see Outreach property being damaged or destroyed as the criminals are likely to be caught even if you do not attempt to stop them yourself (which you should never do.)
