About National Express Coaches

The National Express brand was first used in 1974, although the company had been operating previously to that. For much of its existence there was hardly any competition for them, with no other companies able to elbow their way into the long-distance coach market. This lack of competition allowed National Express Coaches to grow into the huge company they are today. Nowadays they do have competition though, which comes in the form of Megabus. National Express Coaches is still the larger of the two companies though, and certainly the more recognizable.

National Express Coaches provide services throughout the country, linking the majority of towns and cities in an affordable way. While the journeys are longer than they would be when using alternative transport, the coaches are all comfortable and provide adequate conveniences. What’s more, the coaches are also accessible for those with disabilities. There are discounts available to young people, the elderly, those with disabilities and families. If you want to book a ticket, it is best to call them, as then you can be sure that you’re getting the best possible deal.

National Express Coaches: A British Institution

National Express Coaches: you see them on the roads, hear about them on TV and radio, and they’ve even been immortalised in song. There’s no doubting that they are a national institution, but it’s not only the UK where they are common, as they are that rare thing – a British brand that has become well-known throughout the road, with coaches operating from Germany to Bahrain, and from the USA to Morocco. So, as a tribute to this iconic British company, you’ll find a guide to them below, talking about their history, their current operations, and how you can book a coach or make a complaint…

The History of National Express Coaches

Back in 1972, the National Bus Company, which was a state owned body, decided it was time to pool together all the individual bus services they ran throughout the country, creating one single brand that was recognised everywhere. For the first couple of years, this company was simply known as National, however the name was changed to National Express in 1974 – and has stuck since. For the first decade it remained as a government owned company, however in the 1980s it was privatised.

As is often the case, privatisation led to the expansion of the business, however by the 1990s, the company had started to struggle. A new management team was able to turn fortunes around though, and its purchase of Speedlink saw it enter the airport transfer market – a service it still dominates to this day. In 1992 it was floated on the London Stock Exchange – a sure sign that things were on the up again.

Between 1992 and the present day, National Express continued to expand and, perhaps most importantly, began to diversify into new countries, making the brand an international one. It has also seen National Express move into rail transport as well, and it now operates train networks in both the UK and Germany. Overall, they’ve come rather a long way since starting out as a state-owned coach company in the early 1970s…

What Services Do They Offer Nowadays?

Despite the diversification in recent years, National Express’ main focus is still undoubtedly coach travel. They are perhaps best known for transporting eager holidaymakers to airports throughout the UK, and those travelling to airports such as Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted. They also run a number of regular routes, taking in a number of major towns and cities throughout the country, and are preferred by many as they are often much cheaper than train travel. They often even put on special coaches for different events, meaning that they’re often seen rolling up to places such as Glastonbury, the V Festival and Wembley, often accompanied by hordes of screaming, excited fans.

Train users might also find themselves on a service run by National Express, as they own c2c, the company that operates the London, Tilbury and Southend passenger franchise. They don’t just run train services in the UK though, as they are also the operators of the Rhein-Munsterland-Express and the Rhein-Wupper-Bahn, both of which are found in Germany. They are also scheduled to start operating the Nuremberg S-Bahn system in Bavaria soon.

That’s still not all they offer though, as their website also allows people to book hotels close to airports, so that they don’t have to have a mad rush to make an early-morning flight. They offer accommodation at over 166 different hotels, covering 28 UK airports, so every traveller should be able to find something to suit their needs.
