Churchill Insurance: From Recent Past to Present

Churchill insurance has been around for more than 35 years rising up from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognizable names in the UK insurance industry. In 2002 Churchill bought Prudential’s UK insurance business and a year later it was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland for £1.1bn. Not bad for a company that had been started by one man, Martin Long, as a way to provide car insurance.

Corporate Image

Churchill is probably as well known for its bulldog mascot as it is for its insurance products. The mascot was intended to both give the brand a unique identity and to differentiate it from former Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The bulldog has had a colourful association with the insurance giant appearing in print and television media campaigns, internet advertisements and famously as an enormous hot air balloon that has made numerous appearances around the country since its launch in 2004. In 2012 a talking soft toy Churchill was introduced and quickly became a popular item.

Past, Present and Future

Like many other companies Churchill was rocked by the financial crisis of 2008. RBS which had purchased it several years before was bailed out by the UK government who insisted as part of the deal that certain RBS assets be sold off, including Churchill. Eventually it became part of the new Direct Line Group.

Today the company offers a wide array of general insurance products including but not limited to car, home, travel and life insurance. The also offer motorbike and pet insurance products as well as breakdown coverage. And they offer commercial van insurance through their affiliate Brightside Insurance Services.

While the company have managed to navigate the choppy waters of mergers and acquisitions and emerged largely unscathed from the financial crisis that spelled the end for so many businesses, their tenure near the pinnacle of UK commercial success hasn’t been all roses.

Controversy

In January of 2012 Churchill and its partner company Direct Line were fined more than £2m after being found guilty of doctoring customer complaint files. The problem began when both companies were asked by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to provide a sampling of customer complaints so that FSA regulators could examine how they were being handled. In an attempt to get the best possible result out of the regulators Churchill and Direct Line apparently altered some files and even created others out of whole cloth.

Although the infractions were considered serious and the fine substantial Churchill’s actions were not considered malicious. The doctoring of customer complaint files to present a better corporate face was more ill-advised and short-sighted than it was blatantly criminal. The FSA did not find that any customers had been harmed by the company’s actions and the company continues to chart a path toward future growth.

Getting in Touch

As one of the best known insurance companies in the nation Churchill has issued countless insurance policies of every type. They also continue to pursue an aggressive campaign of attracting new customers through TV, print and Internet advertising. Because of the sheer number of outstanding policies and the scores of new customers the company attracts on a daily basis getting through to a human at Churchill to discuss a claim, purchase or modify a policy or lodge a complaint can be a challenge. The good news however is that it doesn’t have to be.
